Community Notice

Good afternoon Missanabie residents, visitors and band members abroad, MCFN would like to address the current weather and fire conditions in Missanabie Ontario. Current information from Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests states there are two fires that are being held Northwest of Dubereuiville, Ontario. Fire: Wawa014 & Wawa016 are being held are being monitored for changing conditions.

We are aware there is heavy smoke and ash falling onto the community of Missanabie. MCFN would like to reassure people that there is no immediate threat of wildfire to the community of Missanabie.

An orange-level air quality warning is currently in effect for Missanabie due to wildfire smoke. The air quality impact is high, and everyone is at risk of health effects, regardless of age or health status.

Please take the following precautions:

• Limit time outdoors and reschedule or cancel outdoor activities and events.

• Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to protect indoor air quality.

• Use high-quality air filters or certified portable air cleaners indoors if available.

• If you must go outside, wear a well-fitted N95 or equivalent respirator mask.

• Check on Elders, youth, and those with health conditions to ensure their safety.

• Monitor for symptoms such as eye, nose, or throat irritation, headaches, or cough. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

An EXTREME fire warning has been issued for the Missanabie area. This means a total fire ban on all burning activities. The sacred fire will continue to burn, as there is 24-hour supervision of the fire, and it’s enclosed in the Tiipii.

To be prepared for uncertainty, Missanabie Cree First Nation has developed a Master Emergency Response Plan that outlines operating procedures and guidelines of managing an emergency.

651 and 101 highways are Missanabie’s main routes to exit if there was an emergency. If the 651 and 101 highways are compromised, the community is asked to exit through the Renabie Road to Dubereuiville. In case of a real world situation, the Community Control Group will make a public announcement and provide information and instructions on the emergency.

At this point we ask community and band members to remain vigilant, please no open air burning, and keep yourself safe from the harsh wildfire smoke.
