ONECA is the Ontario Native Education Counselling Association and they have produced a 2022 calendar featuring significant Indigenous events, accomplishments and more monthly.
SHANNEN’S DREAM was featured for the month of January 2022.
Shannen Koostachin, of Attawapiskat First Nation, lead a movement for “safe and comfy” schools in response to the dilapidated, makeshift school on her reserve. Her remarkable leadership prompted Shannen’s nomination for the International Children’s Peace Prize.
Tragically, on June 1, 2010, at the age of 16, Shannen died as a result of a car accident. Her legacy lives on through Shannen’s Dream, a youth driven movement advocating for equitable funding for First Nation schools.
On June 22, 2012, the day that Shannen would have graduated, construction started on a new school in Attawapiskat – the Kattawapiskak Elementary School

Pink Shirt Day began when two Nova Scotia teens saw a classmate being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. They bought pink shirts and handed them out. Soon, nearly the whole school was wearing pink shirts to show support for the student being bullied. On February 23rd, wear your pink shirt to show you will not tolerate bullying.
