The way that Indigenous people participate in federal impact assessments has changed with the new Impact Assessment Act.

Determining impacts on Indigenous rights and interests is important so that any negative impacts can be mitigated and/or accommodated. Impact assessments can result in positive relationships and agreements between indigenous communities, project proponents and governments.

Topics to be discussed:

  • Federal impact assessment process

  • Indigenous participation in federal impact assessment

  • Impact Benefit Agreements (IBA) and impact assessment

  • Indigenous-led impact assessment
